Landing at Kutaisi International Airport (KUT) places you in a prime position for exploring Georgia by car. As western Georgia's main aviation gateway — currently undergoing a 240 million GEL modernization — it is the natural launch point for the best road trips from kutaisi: high Caucasus mountain routes, Black Sea coast drives, and cultural inland corridors.
When you rent a car at Kutaisi Airport, you can move on your own schedule instead of depending on marshrutkas and fixed tours. This guide covers route logistics, stops, road realities, and vehicle fit. For legal and safety context, pair this with our Driving in Georgia guide.
Kutaisi to Svaneti (Mestia & Ushguli)
Option 1 — Classic Route via Zugdidi
211–223 km · 4h45–5h38
For most travelers doing kutaisi to mestia by car, the Zugdidi–Jvari–Mestia road is the standard route. It is fully paved, but the Enguri gorge section is a known rockfall and landslide zone. Check updates from the Georgian Roads Department before departure.
Option 2 — Zagari Pass Loop
~160 km each way · ~4 hours
The Zagari loop (Kutaisi–Tskaltubo–Tsageri–Lentekhi–Ushguli) is the adventurous line. The zagari pass road condition 2026 is much better after rehabilitation, but short 100–200 m unsealed sections remain in active landslide zones. At 2,620 m elevation, expect seasonal closure; access is typically late May to mid-October.
Mestia to Ushguli
46–47 km, usually 60–90 minutes. Mostly sealed, with a few rough patches and a shallow concrete river crossing that can rise after rain.
Planning Notes
- Best Season: July to September
- Vehicle: The best car for svaneti is a high-clearance SUV or crossover
- Alternative: Vanilla Sky flights Kutaisi–Mestia in 25–30 min (40–95 GEL, AK-Air Georgia, VFR — cancellations common)

Kutaisi to Batumi
The kutaisi to batumi drive time is typically 2 to 3.5 hours for 115–157 km. Follow the E60 East-West Highway toward the coastal corridor. The Batumi Bypass Road (opened October 2024, 14.3 km, 5 tunnels, 19 bridges) reduces bottlenecks. A sedan is fully adequate.
Scenic Stops
